China Starts Work on Commercial Constellation

Beijing - China has launched construction of its first commercial space based constellation dedicated to monitoring space debris, marking a major step toward strengthening global space safety and enhancing the country’s rapidly expanding commercial aerospace sector.

The project, led by a consortium of Chinese commercial space companies and supported by national space authorities, aims to deploy a network of satellites capable of tracking orbital debris in real time. The constellation will provide high precision data on the location, movement, and risk level of debris objects, helping satellite operators and space agencies avoid collisions in increasingly crowded orbits.

According to project officials, the constellation will be built in phases, with the first batch of satellites scheduled for launch later this year. Once fully operational, the system will offer continuous surveillance of low Earth orbit, where most commercial satellites operate and where debris density poses the greatest threat.

China’s commercial space industry has grown rapidly in recent years, with private companies advancing satellite manufacturing, launch services, and remote sensing technologies. The new debris monitoring constellation is expected to support both domestic and international customers, providing data services for navigation, communications, and Earth observation operators.

Space debris has become one of the most pressing challenges for global space governance, with more than 30,000 tracked objects and millions of smaller fragments orbiting Earth. China’s initiative aligns with international efforts to improve space situational awareness and promote responsible behavior in outer space.

Officials emphasized that the constellation will contribute to safer space operations worldwide and support long term sustainability of orbital environments as commercial activity continues to accelerate.
